DRC: Community Consultations in Pangi to Strengthen Local Community Participation in Conservation

Pangi, Maniema Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Community consultations are underway in the territory of Pangi, Maniema Province, to gather the concerns of local populations, recognize their traditional knowledge, and strengthen their participation in the community forestry process.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote community-based conservation and enhance the connectivity of natural habitats with those of Lomami National Park.

These dialogue spaces provide communities with an opportunity to freely express their views, share their experiences and expectations, and discuss the challenges they face in their daily lives. The objective is to jointly identify local priorities and develop solutions tailored to the realities of the territory.

More than just a consultation exercise, this approach serves as an essential mechanism to:

- Promote inclusive dialogue among all stakeholders;

- Strengthen local ownership of conservation initiatives;

- Ensure that community voices and concerns are effectively taken into account in decision-making processes.

Through this participatory approach, the communities of Pangi are encouraged to become agents of change by identifying actions that can improve their living conditions, preserve their natural resources, and support inclusive and sustainable development.

Active participation by local communities remains one of the most effective ways to develop sustainable solutions rooted in local realities and driven by the aspirations of the people.

Pangi is thus emerging as a key area for dialogue, civic participation, and sustainable development.
