Congo basin conservation society is pleased to announce the birth of a baby hippopotamus weighing 50 kilos, belonging to the species hippopotamus amphibius.

He was born on the evening of May 27 at the confluence of Ruzizi and Luvinvi in ​​Kamanyola in the territory of Walungu in South Kivu in the DRC.


The baby hippopotamus is doing well, he is with his mother in her maternity ward.
This herbivore, which lives in its natural environment but threatened by poaching.

The luvinvi river a confluence of the Ruzizi is a cross-border area with Burundi where the hipos are very threatened by the population of the DRC.

Happy birthday to all members of environmental civil society in Kamanyola and elsewhere. The baby will be named "Sango" in honor of the place where he was born. A name naming event will be held in kamanyola in the coming days. In addition, the environmental civil society informs the community of the plain that the only animal that has value from the Ruzizi plain is the hippopotamus and it reserves the right to take legal action in the event of reviving for kill anyone caught setting the trap.

The protection of this species is of paramount importance given the ongoing community tourism activities in the area by CBCS.
