Quality Cocoa Seedlings Available at the CBCS Nursery in the BB-Wamaza Sector (Kabambare Territory, Maniema Province)

As part of its programme to promote agroecology and food sovereignty, the NGO CBCS Network continues to successfully implement sustainable development initiatives in support of cocoa farming in Maniema Province.

To date, 4 hectares have already been established, and more than 5,000 vigorous cocoa seedlings are currently available at the nursery. They are ready for planting starting in August, at the beginning of Season A. This initiative contributes to landscape restoration, improving the incomes of local farmers, conserving biodiversity, and strengthening food sovereignty.

Recent field visits have confirmed the excellent health and growth of the existing cocoa plantations. The encouraging development of young cocoa trees demonstrates the strong commitment of local communities and the effectiveness of the agroecological practices being implemented on the ground.

Cocoa is increasingly becoming a promising crop for rural households. Integrated into an innovative agroforestry system and combined with banana trees and fruit trees, cocoa farming helps to promote:

?Soil protection and regeneration

The conservation of natural and community forests;

More resilient agriculture in the face of climate change;

The protection of forest landscapes that are home to great apes;

The development of community-based green enterprises;

The strengthening of local economies by providing Indigenous and local communities with sustainable economic and ecological development opportunities.
