CLIMATE JUSTICE: AFRICA REJECTS GEOENGINEERING AND DEMANDS URGENT REFORMS

Faced with the accelerating global climate crisis, Africa is categorically rejecting technological solutions developed by “sorcerer’s apprentices” and calling for genuine climate justice. The continent is advocating for sustainable approaches focused on strengthening the resilience of the most vulnerable communities.

Although Africa has historically been responsible for less than 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions, it is bearing the brunt of the climate crisis. From prolonged droughts to devastating floods, accelerating land degradation, biodiversity loss, and chronic food insecurity, the human and environmental cost is already unbearable.

It is in this context of urgency that many African scientists and civil society voices are speaking out against geoengineering—the deliberate large-scale manipulation of the climate. Far from being a miracle solution, these technologies pose major environmental, geopolitical, and social risks that could further worsen the continent’s ecological imbalances.

Africa refuses to become an experimental laboratory. It is calling for immediate structural reforms based on:

• A drastic and genuine reduction in greenhouse gas emissions at their source by industrialized countries;
• The protection and restoration of natural ecosystems, such as the Congo Basin;
• The effective mobilization of climate finance without imposing additional debt on the continent;
• Transparent transfer of clean technologies and the strengthening of local capacities.

Climate justice cannot be negotiated behind closed doors. It requires that decisions affecting the future of humanity be made in an equitable, transparent, and inclusive manner. African communities, who are on the front lines of the climate crisis, must have a meaningful and central voice in global climate governance.

It is now imperative to place ecosystem protection, the fundamental rights of peoples, and social justice at the heart of international negotiations.

Africa is not begging for climate charity. It is demanding respect for historical responsibilities, a just transition, and the right to sustainable solutions for its development.
