This initiative has been launched at the request of communities wanting to secure their forests.
Our teams in the field are raising awareness of the benefits of community forestry in the face of current environmental and climate challenges, and of the DRC's vision of conserving 30% of its forests through a community-based approach in order to conserve biodiversity of global importance.
These forest areas belonging to local communities and indigenous peoples will be supported by the agro-ecology project in Maniema province.
The communities decided to protect their forests after being made aware of the need to limit deforestation due to the exploitation of red wood and minerals.
We hope that this project will pave the way for the creation of an ecological corridor for community conservation of great apes and forest elephants on the boundary between the miombo forests and the equatorial forest. It should be noted that the conservation of these primary forests by indigenous and local communities will enable them to develop their means of subsistence and benefit from the advantages of protecting their forests for ecological and economic stability.
